SOCI 162 2009/2010 Exam 1 Study Guide Format I am not sure what the exam will look like but I anticipate it looking something like this: 10 multiple choice questions worth 2 points each. 3 Short answer questions. You will have some flexibility as to which questions you answer but there will be one question all students will be required to answer. Material Below are some terms and concepts that you might want to know in order to be successful on the exam. Note that this list is not meant to be exhaustive nor does inclusion on the list mean that a concept or term will be on the exam. Lecture 1 Introduction to Sociology What is sociology? What is the sociological imagination? Be familiar with positivism and the Enlightenment. Be familiar with each of the sociological paradigms. Lecture 2 The Study of Minorities Be familiar with the following terms: social distance, categoric knowing, minority group, dominant group, racial group, racism, ethnic group, and ethnocentrism. What is social identity theory?
