Fall, 2010 Worksheet for VIDEO: “The Split Horn” Synopsis of the film: “THE SPLIT HORN” is a documentary about a Hmong shaman and his family living in Appleton, Wisconsin. Chronicling the 17-year journey of Paja Thao and his family from the mountains of Laos to the heartland of America, this poignant film shows a shaman's struggles to maintain his ancient traditions as his children embrace American culture. Since 1975, over 200,000 Hmong refugees have resettled in the U.S. 1. What do Hmong believe about U.S. hospitals as “places of healing”? 2. The film follows Paja Thao, a Hmong Shaman. What is his traditional role in the spiritual and physical lives of the Hmong? 3. How has Paja Thao’s biography been shaped by Hmong society? How has it been shaped by American society? 4.
