Questions for A Wizard of Earthsea 1. Do you think this (or any other features of plot or style) gives the story a certain originality, or do you mostly see it as a standard hero-comes-of-age story? Besides Harry Potter, I never really read or heard of any stories from when a wizard was a child. Since this is before Harry Potter, A Wizard of Earthsea is quite original, because the boy does not realize he has magical powers and when he does, he is amazed. The story takes readers into a new wizard’s journeys in becoming those famous ancient and intelligent wizards, such as Merlin. This is the opposite of standard hero-comes-of-age stories from my perspective, because Ged really does not know what he is doing; what he is capable of doing and how to apply his powers at the right time. Therefore, this story takes readers into a step by step story of Ged’s finding of his knowledge, instead of a vague background of his childhood to adulthood. 2.
