20 MIND/BODY BASICS proaches are beginning to be used widely-in university and private clinics, in hospitals, and as an integral part of health promotion programs offered by such Fortune 500 corporate giants as AT&T, Johnson 6c Johnson, IBM, and General Motors. These programs are gaining support because they empower individuals, teaching them skills for self-managemenr and giving them the knowledge to make informed choices that can promote better health. Today, the medical research community is also taking mind/body interac- tions more seriously. One sign of the shift in attitudes was a recent report by the Institute of Medicine, a branch of the National Academy of Sciences, which conducted an inquiry into behavioral influences on the relationship befween hormones and immunity. The report's conclusion: "scientific data generally support the idea that the nervous system directly or through neuro- endocrine mechanisms Ithe effects of the nervous system on hormones] can affect the immune system." Similarly, a 1992 review of stress and disease from two physicians, researchers at the National Institutes of Health, noted the role of stress in a wide array of.
