Marc Stafford  History 210 B Dr. Hill Levine, Bruce Half Slave and Half Free: The Roots of Civil War   Hill and Wang,  New York, NY. 1992 Thesis:   8 Part thesis beginning on page 14 and ending on page 16.  The eight  part thesis boils down to: the Civil War was the unavoidable consequence of  irrepressible conflict between two contrasting societies – the North (built on free  labor) and the South (built on slavery). Rationale:   To explain that slavery was the main cause of the Civil War.  An up  to date synthesis of the work that has been done on the causes of the Civil War.  Also as a response to some who have argued that states rights and not slavery  was the main cause of the Civil War. Historiographical Position:  Levine is part of the New Left Methodology/Sources:  Levine uses secondary sources predominantly from the  last half century.  This work is s synthesis.
