Physics 52 Proficiency Test 4(Sample) (Time: 5 minutes) 25 points By Todd Sauke Name ________ KEY _____________ Section # __ KEY ___ For the following items, indicate which law(s) of thermodynamics the item violates. In this picture, the First Law of Thermodynamics is violated, since energy is not conserved. Work is continually extracted from the system, which is not possible. Also, the Second Law of Thermodynamics is violated, since the work output from the water wheel could be used to run a refrigerator, leaving the only result being that heat was moved from a cold place to a hot place. Any violation of the First Law that produces work "from thin air" would be able to be used to violate the Second Law. In the Escher print above, water flows down the channels, until reaching the top, where it cascades down, turning a water wheel to extract work, and beginning the cycle again. The law(s) of thermodynamics violated above are (circle as many as apply): _________ __________ Zeroth Law (First Law ) (Second Law ) None of these (over)
