Exam 2 review The exam will include several short questions focusing on theory and several longer calculation problems. You should plan on at least one problem each from Chapters 7 and 8. Chapters to be covered include 6, 7, 8, and a little bit of 9 -- only the chapter sections listed in the syllabus. There will be no calculation problems from Chapter 9. Calculation problems may include a) flow over a flat plate laminar or turbulent flow or a combination? constant heat flux or constant surface temperature? do you need the average or local heat transfer coefficient? b) flow over a cylinder c) flow over a sphere d) internal flow, temperature considerations thermally developing or developed flow? laminar or turbulent? constant heat flux or surface temperature? e) internal flow, pumping power considerations (calculating f, P, or pumping power) hydrodynamically developing or developed flow?

Some possibilities: • What the Prandlt number means physically • How fast thermal and velocity boundary layers grow • What each of the terms in the energy equation (Eq. 6-36) stand for physically • When viscous dissipation must be included • Explain why Figures 7-9, 7-18, 7-22, 8-8, and 9-10 look like they do • What causes natural convection • What β is • When natural convection cannot be neglected The exam is closed book. You may have one page of notes (one side of an 8 1/2”x11” sheet), and you will be provided with a copy of the equation sheet posted on the Blackboard system. All specific equations needed are given on that sheet. However, there may be a few very general equations, such as Newton’s Law of Cooling, that you should know....
