Experiment H: Identification of an Unknown Conclusion Report The goals of the experiment was to identify the structure of an unknown organic liquid by IR spectrum and NMR spectrum analysis. In this experiment, an unknown liquid were given to me. The unknown alcohol was #194 and molecular weight was 188. To find out the structure of the unknown, IR spectrum and NMR spectrum for the sample were recorded. According to IR spectrum of unknown liquid, there was an absorption at less than 3000 cm-1 showing sp3 C-H stretch being present . The absorption at around1448 cm-1 and at 1376.35 represented sp3 CH2 stretch and CH3 bend respectively. Also, there was C=O stretch at peak around 1738-1726 cm-1 . There was a strong indication that the unknown is a ester because carbonyl group, methylene group , methionine and methyl group were present in the unknown sample . The NMR spectrum for my unknown was really complex, and it was hard to determine the structure for unknown. According to NMR spectrum,
