Childhood Obesity 2 Childhood Obesity “Overweight and obesity are both labels for ranges of weight that are greater than what is generally considered healthy for a given height. The terms also identify ranges of weight that have been shown to increase the likelihood of certain diseases and other health problems.” (Center for Disease Control 2008) Aren’t you curious as to why you can’t look outside and see kids playing along side the birds and squirrels? Isn’t it odd that basketballs and footballs aren’t being bounced and thrown around in yards and street corners? Well kids aren’t spending time running and playing outside anymore because they’re inside in front of the TV, playing the latest video games, or engulfed in an intense computer game. Not to mention in today’s society that seems infatuated on convenience; our adolescents are not taught proper healthy eating habits. Four factors nourish the rising rates of childhood obesity in our communities. The first factor is the lack of physical activity, second inadequate healthy eating mannerisms, and third poor education on how to eat healthy and last but certainly not least is America’s infatuation with the constant increase of convenience for busy Americans. Physical activity is what we’ve been doing since elementary school. It can include the fun games such as dodge ball, 4 square, and tag or the 1 mile timed run once or twice a week. But other than the mandated physical education during school hours, kids are becoming less and less
