Abstract A cantilever beam was end loaded to determine its deflection experimentally and theoretically. An LVDT was used to determine the beams deflection and a strength of material approach analysis on the beam was performed to calculate the theoretical value of the beam deflection. Lab View software was used to read the output from the LVDT and to calculate the beam’s deflection. The results from the VI deviated from the expected theoretical in the range of 20 percent. The actual deflections values obtained from the VI deviated around 12 percent when compared to the theoretical values calculated.

Background and Objectives A steel cantilever beam was analyzed to determine its elastic deflection due to external loading. The intent of the experiment is to use an LVDT (Linear Voltage Differential Transformer) to determine the deflection of the beam and compared the measured valued with the theoretical. The LVDT has a magnetic coil and a metal core which moves through the magnetic field due the loading which in turn creates a voltage that is converted to distance by the VI created with Lab View. The displacement of the beam was measured at four different loadings and compared to the theoretical deflection
