THE RHYTHMIC MODES The opening lines of Virgil’s Aeneid : Arma virumque cano, Troiae qui primus ab oris Italiam, fato profugus, Laviniaque venit The scansion of the long-short poetic lengths of Virgilian hexameter The Rhythmic Modes based on Poetic Scansion An important development about 1200 was the codification of ways of combining ligatures to notate specific rhythmic patterns of the music. These patterns were called the rhythmic modes , and there were six of them based on the longs-and shorts of poetic scansion. The smallest unit in each modal pattern was called an ordo (pl. ordines ). Below the ordo of each mode is marked by a bracket.
