Courtly Love: Essential Programming for the Chivalrous Hero Overview : The code of the hero varies across cultures and eras, but certain influential ideas have been adopted widely. In the West, the idea of Courtly Love that developed in the royal courts of the Middle Ages, was reflected in the literature of the period—such as the various versions of the Arthur-Guenivere-Lancelot story. These ideas still holds sway with many, even with many who might not consider themselves to be “Romantic.” On the other hand, some of these ideas would today be considered pathological or at best, adolescent. (See Capellanus below). Key ideas of Courtly Love : Love is an ennobling force that brings the courtly lover to a higher spiritual plane. Obstacles to love are good, as they spur the lover to a higher level of performance and purify his passions. Unrequited love is the most noble form, as it requires unselfish devotion, ideally to the death. Service is the essential character of love: the knight serves his lady.
