San José State University Humanities Honors Program HUM 1A Speech Assignment--Fall 2009 (Hanns Hohmann, James Lindahl, Cynthia Rostankowski, Jennifer Rycenga, Lisa Stenmark) In this first semester of the Humanities Honors Program, you will be expected to give an approximately three-minute "epideictic" speech , i.e. a speech of praise or blame in which you provide a critique, explaining and justifying your positive and/or negative evaluation of a person, event, or work. You should focus on persons, events or works that are part of or closely related to the course readings , since these will be familiar to your fellow students as your audience. Please be sure to consult with your section instructor on your choice of a topic. In your speech, you need to lay out criteria for the evaluation of your subject, and to provide specific evidence showing how these criteria apply to your subject. It will be important to develop an evaluative thesis that holds some interest for your audience; this will require that you go beyond generally accepted conventional evaluations
