ScWk 298 Special Project – The Literature Review Purposes of Literature Review I. Topic Formulation Stage A. Keyword searches on problem or interest B. Extent of information on first attempts; refining the search C. Focus on abstracts at this stage II. Theoretical Justification A. Review theories used by previous researchers (limiting yourself to one theory for your paper is preferable and more manageable) B. Assess theory’s direct use in hypotheses, research questions, or themes III. Research Questions and Hypotheses A. Decision point: should you replicate others’ questions/hypotheses, or develop new ones? B. Replication is acceptable and often preferred--your study might address different populations, and/or different or additional variables but adapt the same research questions and methods C. Link your research questions, hypotheses, or themes on the literature. “Based on the (gaps in…, previous research in the…, importance of…), this research will explore…” IV.
