MEDIA ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT You and members of your group will investigate how people from the target sphere you are assigned to study are portrayed in print advertisements or in television programming . Each group will: 1. formulate research questions about the presentation of the target group in print or media; 2. design a planned observational study to research current state of print or media; 3. perform the planned observations; 4. communicate the findings by: preparing a 2-3 page summary report of methodology and results; leading a discussion in class of their findings. Each individual in the group will also prepare a 3-5 page paper interpreting the findings of the whole group. In the individual paper, you should: 1. interpret the findings of the whole group 2. discuss the implications of those findings 3. relate the findings to course material and at least 3 relevant peer-reviewed journal articles 4. describe the limitations of your findings 5. suggest future research questions or issues that your findings imply At the scheduled class presentation time, one or more of your group should be prepared to give a brief verbal summary of the group’s methodology and findings. The whole group should be prepared to answer questions and facilitate discussion. In addition to the written report, you may use supportive materials to make your points, e.g. ads, pictures, short video clips (no more than 2 or so minutes), graphs, handouts, etc. If you choose to show a video clip, you will need to check with me about arranging for a VCR (this needs to be done at least a few days before your presentation).
