12/17/06 Section 16 Reader Response #1 The New kid at School Summer was finally here, and I was not looking forward to it. I had just finished the fourth grade, and my family was moving. I was raised in a fairly small city, Newark, California, until the age of ten. I was upset that I had to leave behind my public elementary school and attend a different one. The summer began to fly by each day, as I shared most of the time with my older brother. Soon enough, I enrolled in the fifth grade at my nearby public elementary school. I missed the first week of school being in session, so I began going to the class on the following week. On my first day of class, I got the feeling that all the other kids in the class knew and shared a connection with one another. I was worried about how the kids would treat me since none of them knew who I was. I used to think that I would not make that many friends right away. I could not bear the thought of being isolated with the other children in the school. Unlike in Alexie’s story,
