Experiment F- Fischer Esterification of an unknow alcohol Conclusion Resport The purpose of this experiment was to prepare an acetate ester of an unknown alcohol by Fischer esterification. This was done by reacting acetic acid and unknown alcohol in the presence concentrated sulphuric acid. This acid acts as a catalyst in this reaction. To find out the structure of unknown, IR spectrum of both product and reactant and also NMR spectrum for product was recorded. The unknown alcohol was #212. From IR, NMR and boiling point analysis, the unknown alcohol was determined to be 3 methyl 1 butanol. The amount of product yield for this experiment was 10.18 grams. This accounted for 52.12% product collected. IR was done for the starting material and the end product for this experiment. The IR spectrum of alcohol has a sharp peak for hydrogen bonded OH band at 3338.58- 3306.95 cm-1, showing that alcohol was present in the mixure. There was absorption
