English 71 Work for Feb. 9 Moody Spring 2010 First make a list of five to ten proverbial expressions used in your family. Examples are: “The early bird gets the worm,” “Make haste, make waste.” See if you can make a short poem out of your list as Simon Armitage has done in his poem “A Nutshell.” It must make sense. Think about where these expressions might have originated. Who uses them in your family? Does the use of the expression go back to elder relatives, an aunt, a grandmother? You might also try to write a poem made up of only song titles. Next, turn to page 62 in your text and do Number 1. Bring both pieces to class to share. Lastly, look at the poems “Summer Farm” by Norman MacCaig and “Shérdi” by Sujata Bhatt. List all the images you find in these poems. Remember, a writer pays attention to the details. These poems call upon memories. Think about memory. You will use in the section on Personal Narratives. A Nutshell
