Ghazals by Jalal al-din Rumi (1207-1273) I am a Painter of Forms Surat gar-e naqqasham, har lahze buti  sazam Vanke hame  butha-ra, dar pesh-e to bugdazam Sad naqsh bar angezam, baa ruh dar amezam Chun naqsh-e tura binam, dar atishash andazam To saqiy-e khummari, ya  dushman-e hoshyari Ya anke kuni viran, har khane ki barsazam Jan rekhte shud ba to amekhte shud ba to Chun  buye to darad jan, janra hile banvazam Dar khana-ye ab o gil be tost kharab in dil Ya khane dar a, ai jan, ya khana be-pardazam Original in Arberry p. 134. 1st version I am a painter of forms, each second idols I’ll paint And then in front of your form these idols in fire I’ll melt A thousand forms I’ll summon, with spirit will I infill them The second, though, I glimpse you--in fire will I fling them I know you hate all knowing, you pour the wine of unknowing You relish empty wastelands: each roof I build you’ll tear.  On you life lies all scattered, in you is life dissolving The second I get your wiff, that life I will hold dear.
