Bus 187 T-Th 10:30 10/21/2008 Lincoln Electric Case Study 1. The source of Lincoln Electric’s long standing success in the U.S. market for arc welding equipment is their piecework incentive program and organizational culture. The piecework incentive program pays employees based upon how many pieces they produce. The result of wages based on productivity leads to very high employee output and low costs. The program serves as a motivator for employees to be more efficient and to work longer hours, fulfilling the belief that motivated people can produce amazing results. Another factor that has lead Lincoln to have a competitive advantage in the arc welding industry is their organizational culture based on an egalitarian employee structure in which the managers and floor employees all eat in the same cafeteria, all park in the same parking lot with no reserved spaces, and communicate with very few barriers. Due to the high motivation of employees and their strong organizational culture
