Blame the Funding I am unaware of how schools systems are set up and run in other states, but I do have a pretty good idea of how things work in California. Which school you go to (assuming you aren’t paying for private school) depends on where you live; as does how much money the school receives. If your single mother desperately wants to purchase her own house so the two of you can stop living with your grandmother, who lives in a very nice neighborhood, she probably can’t afford to move somewhere fantastic. That’s how you find yourself moving from Saratoga to Downtown San Jose, where housing is cheaper, as are the taxes paid by those who live there. Most, if not all, the money received by schools in that area come from those taxes, which is how a sixth grader can find herself attending a school with music and art programs one day, to a school where English is no one’s first language the next. Obviously, I was that sixth grader, and I was less than please about moving to a bad neighborhood with a bad school system. I didn’t
