MONARCHS OF ENGLAND - IN RELATION TO RELIGION IN AMERICA Monarch dates reigned relation to America Richard III 1483-1485 last of house of York, his death ends wars of succession known as the War of the Roses Henry VII 1485-1509 establishes the house of Tudor; his children listed below Henry VIII 1509-1547 establishes Church of England (Anglican church) with break from Papal authority Edward VI 1547-1553 Church of England becomes more firmly Protestant in its theological orientation Lady Jane Grey 1553 In a failed attempt to keep the Church of England Protestant, an attempt is made to place Lady Jane Grey, a grand-daughter of Henry VII, on the throne instead of Mary. The coup fails, and she is executed a few years later. Mary I 1553-1558 Attempts to re-establish Catholic Church as the official church of England; marries Philip II of Spain; persecutes and executes leaders of the Church of England; also known as "Bloody Mary" (she is not the same person as Mary, Queen of Scots)
