HIV/AIDS – RELATED STATISTICS Worldwide… HIV has been known for 29 years (1981) Over 26 million people have died from AIDS; 2 million die every year Over 34 million people are living with HIV/AIDS Over 15.5 million women are living with HIV/AIDS There are 0ver 14,000 new infections every day 40% of these new infections occur in people ages 15-24 There are an estimated 14 million AIDS orphans 70% of people who need treatment don’t receive it In the US… Over 1.2 million people have HIV/AIDS Over 250,000 (1/5 to 1/4) of these people don’t know they have HIV/AIDS Almost 700,000 Americans have died from AIDS (more than 10X the number killed in the Vietnam War) Over 56,000 new infections occur each year Approximately 70% of new infections occur in men and 30% in women Almost 50% of new infections occur among African Americans 64% of new infections in women occur among African Americans 80% of the new infections in women are heterosexually transmitted
