HIST 100W DON First Paper Tips Here are a few things that I think you should keep in mind as you write the first paper. 1. Remember the historical question, whether you state it or imply it in the introduction, needs two qualities: a question narrow enough for a five-page paper and a question for which the primary source will have the answer. 2. The thesis answers the historical question in a definitive and positive way. To make it easiest on yourself (because it is only a five-page paper), you should consider blueprinting and keep it simple and clear. Also, in these papers you need to stay referenced to the primary source (as you should throughout the paper) and use enough definitive words in the thesis to make your position clear. In these sources, for example: a.If your School of Athens paper is dealing with how the composition of the painting (mean- ing the placement and inclusion of the various figures) reflects the values of the Renais- sance, then you need to use the word “composition” in your thesis, because that is what you are analyzing in the paper. If, however, you are wanting to focus on the signific- ance of a painting of ancient scholars being in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Pope Julius II, then you need to use “Stanza della Segnatura” in the thesis and suggest how
