Procedure for Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) Purpose: Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) is used to help teachers and students revalue reading and the reading strategies that a reader uses as well as the linguistic knowledge they possess. Research shows that proficient and struggling readers use the same strategies. Struggling readers differ in that they believe that reading means saying the words on the page using phonics information rather than making meaning. Retrospective Miscue Analysis helps readers know that they have knowledge about meaning and syntax which allows them to read proficiently. 1. Initial Session with Reader Arrangements and Materials: Tape recorder, text for reading, and a typescript for marking miscues. Procedures: a. Establish rapport b. Tape-record reading and retelling 2.
