AMS 169 Guenter Some focus points for discussion of Edward Albee’s play “The American Dream.” (These are not meant to be restrictive, but rather suggestive of ways you might help organize your thoughts for seminar discussion.) What are the different characters names? Why do you think they have these names? Are there any characters you like, dislike, or identify with, and why? What do the different characters seem to represent or signify? How does the playwright use word play or deft use of language to convey meaning? Is this effective or not, and why? Do you notice any unusual use of a pronoun, and if so, any theories on why it is used this way? At times different characters tell little parables, or stories with a lesson to learn. What lessons are being taught in some of these stories? Do you agree or disagree with the point of the parable?
