1 Introduction This research examines the mental health help-seeking behavior of young adults who were diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder as adolescents. Specifically, the study will focus on the role that substance use plays in the mental health help-seeking behavior of young adults, aged 18-25. The relationship between alcohol and other drug (AOD) use and severe mental illness (SMI) has been of concern to mental health clinicians, and has been a focus of much research. There is increasing interest in “co-occurring disorders,” those that include both psychiatric disorders and AOD abuse, and the most effective ways to treat people who suffer from both types of disorders (Epstein, Barker, Vorburger, & Murtha, 2004). Research shows a high prevalence of substance abuse disorders among those diagnosed with SMI, and that those
