Santa Barbara. "My area of specialization is philosophical aesthetics, and I have published widely in this area. Kivy, Oxford: Blackwell, 2002. 1) the relationship between the natural and the artificial in certain aesthetically significant contexts is "dialectical": the two terms of the relation designate conflicting forces, and this [commonly] brings into being some third object, in this case the object of aesthetic appreciation 2) classical aesthetics: nature provides the model for artistic composition, and the relationship is presumably harmonious, and [then sometimes] art is the model for an aesthetics of nature: again this would be harmonious 3) contemporary environmental sculpture might explain the dialectical a) Dennis Oppenheim Cancelled Crops 1969 and Annual Rings 1968 b) Robert Smithson Spiral Jetty 1970 "dialectics of place" i) emerges as an especially powerful and complicated earthwork even for those not familiar with Smith's theoretical writings
