SOC 104 – 2010 DUE DATE Quantitative Research Methods SPSS EX3 – Transforming Variables In this assignment you will take existing variables and change them into new variables. This is a useful skill since sometimes you may want/need to collapse variables or you may need to change the direction of a particular variable. I will first walk you through the example using the variable “wrkstat” and at the end I will tell you what variables you will be working with. You should also do the wrkstat variable and save it since we will be using the transformed version again in the future. The first step is to run frequency for the variable you will be transforming. Note that you may have already run the frequency distribution in previous assignments so consult your portfolio. Now it is time to actually transform the variables. Go to the toolbar and under “Transform” select “Recode into Different Variables…” (see Figure 1). Figure 1 This will cause a screen like the one in Figure 2 to come up. Select the variable you will be transforming (in this case wrkstat) and move it into the “Numeric
