What makes design so interest- ing and challenging is the other two percent; what one might call ‘aesthetics’.- Sir Terence Conran Design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as to best accomplish a particu- lar purpose.- Charles Eames Industrial Design Foundation I (DSID31) is the frst o¡ two studio experiences designed to introduce students to the foundation principles of design and develop their abilities to explore and communicate their design concepts. There are three primary goals ¡or the course. The frst is to teach students sa¡e and e¡¡ective shop skills so that they become e¡¡ective at exploring and communicating their design concepts with a wide range o¡ tools available to them and in a variety o¡ three-dimensional media. The second is to introduce the basic elements of three-dimensional design and foundation principles o¡ visual structure. The fnal goal is to rein¡orce a design process o¡ experimentation and refnement. The intended outcome is a heighten awareness, improved observa- tion skills and ability to understand, create and communicate three-dimensional ¡orms clearly, e¡¡ectively and beauti¡ully. Foundation I is divided into fve projects assigned to develop the ¡ollowing skills: (1) Your understanding o¡ the elements o¡ design. They include: line, plane or sur¡ace, positive and negative volume, value, texture and color) (2) The ability to organize the basic design elements to create a unifed design and visu- ally communicate your intent. (3) Your ability to resolve multiple ¡orm harmoniously in unifed three-dimensional compositions. (4) The ability to understand and articulate design knowledge and intent, both in your own work and when discussing the work o¡ others. (5) Various methods o¡ generating three-dimensional ¡orm (which translates to com- puter tools) (6) The ability to work confdently in a prototyping environment to sa¡ely and e¡¡ec- tively generate and communicate your design intent. (7) Continue to develop your design process o¡ 2D and 3D sketching and experimenta- tion that will enable you to explore, understand and solve design problems and opportu- nities.
