SOC 104 – 2010 DUE DATE Quantitative Research Methods SPSS EX6 – Splitting Files At this point you already know how to do crosstabs, and that is great, but suppose you wanted to compare three variables at the same time what would you do? Well you are about to learn what to do. In the process you will also learn how to select only certain groups for analysis which is very useful. The questions you will answer with this assignment are: How does empathy vary by sex? Is the variation between men and women the same for Whites and Blacks? How do young (18-35), middle aged (36-64), and old (65+) men and women vary in their level of empathy? Answering the first question is very simple. All you need to do is create a crosstab with “empathyINDXR” as the dependent variable (row) and “sex” as the independent variable (column). See Figure 1. Do not forget to check the column percent box in the “Cells” window. If you need further direction creating crosstabs see SPSSEX4. Figure 1
