Unformatted text preview: Cognitive Restructuring Chapter 8 Introduction to Effective Coping Techniques For any coping technique to be effective, it must do the following: • Increase awareness of the problem • Start information processing • Modify behavior • Work toward a peaceful resolution Interpretation and Perception • The brain receives stimuli • The brain processes (interprets) these stimuli and then • Classifies (perceives) them as negative, neutral, or positive. Research suggests that.. • It’s not the actual circumstances that are stressful; • It’s how the individual interprets and/or perceives them. • Negative perceptions can actually be harmful to the individual’s mental and/or physical health. Cognitive Distortion • The individual may distort or magnify his or her perceptions out of all proportion to reality (making mountains out of molehills) • Examples? • This is called cognitive distortion.
