THE QUESTION OF APPROACH What is the descriptive approach? AN OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION OR A DESCRIPTIVE REPRESENTATION The descriptive approach aims at giving an “objective description” or “descriptive representation” of the legacies of China and India and the Chinese and Indian experiences of modernization in their own terms or for the sake of China and India respectively.

THE QUESTION OF APPROACH What is the descriptive approach? NON-THEORETICAL CHARACTER The descriptive approach does not require the use of powerful concepts, doctrines, and theories for the thinking process since it aims to describe events rather than to think about important questions and problems that events provoke. For instance, if one died, the descriptive approach would aim at describing the death event rather than using this event to think about the questions of life and death.

For instance: How should the agrarian and semi-colonial economy and state like those of China be developed and modernized?

THEORETICAL ORIENTATION The theoretical approach requires the extensive use of “development theories” and “political ideologies” for studies of Chinese and Indian development experiences. Chinese and Indian development experiences shall be examined in light of other modalities of development pursued by other capitalist and socialist countries.

THE QUESTION OF APPROACH I therefore propose to use the “theoretical approach” for our critical examination of the legacies of China and India and their modernization experiences. The use of the theoretical approach does not eliminate the descriptive approach but make selective use of its methods for grounding the conceptual thinking process to the actual historical contexts of China, India, and the world.
