Project Crashing Introduction It is not unusual in the business world for dates to change. A project may be delayed, or a client may move up the due date for the project. In either situation, the project manager must handle the situation. The duration of the remaining activities in the project have to reduce. Learning Materials What is crashing? In the process of speeding up the remaining activities to meet the deadline, the project manager wants to keep the cost low. The process of shortening the duration of a project in the least expensive manner possible is referred to as crashing . Critical path method (CPM) is a deterministic technique with two times estimates for an activity. The first time is the standard or normal time and is used to determine the earliest and latest times. The standard or normal cost of an activity is used to monitor the cost of the project. The second time is the crash time. The crash time is the shortest duration required to complete an activity. The crash cost is associated with the crash time. One method of reducing the completion time for an activity is to increase the resources of the activity. Additional staff or equipment may be required. Because additional resources are being added, the crash cost logically would be higher than the standard cost. Shortening Activities It is not realistic that every activity can be shortened, but some activities can be. The length of time that an activity can be shortened is the difference between the standard and crash times. The goal of the project manager is to shorten the activity as much as possible, but to keep the crash cost as minimal as possible. When deciding which activities to shorten, the project manager must consider if the amount of time an activity is crashed is permissible, the reduced time will complete the project by the due date, and the total cost of crashing is minimal.
