Thus alienating Han gentry, eventually turning their sons, studying abroad, into anti-Qing revolutionaries The Russian fleet was annihilated by the Japanese navy, thus arousing Asian pride among Asian revolutionaries to struggle for a new future. If the Japanese could modernize and defeat a Western power, then, they could do it too.

Grasso and his co-authors give us this reconstruction: The Chinese revolution that created the new Chinese republic began on October 10, 1911 (“Double Ten,” since then a Chinese national holiday), in Wuchang, when a soldier shot and killed his commander, sparking an assault by revolutionary soldiers who soon took over the entire town.
