Acetanilide 135.2 114 0.54 304-305 5.0 Phenacetin 179.2 135 0.076 1.22 Calculations: Volume of boiling water needed to dissolve Acetanilide: 1.27 g Acetanilide X 100 mL water/5.0 g Acetanilide = 25.4 mL H20 Procedure: 1. Recrystallize the unknown drug component from Expt. 2 by boiling it with just enough water to dissolve it completely, then letting it cool slowly to room temperature. Use an Erlenmeyer flask that will easily accommodate the largest volume of recrystallization solvent that you calculated. If necessary, induce crystallization by scratching the sides of the container with a glass stirring rod. Then cool the container further in a beaker containing ice and tap water to increase the yield of product. Collect the solid by vacuum filtration, and wash it with a small amount of ice cold water. Dry the product to constant mass and weigh it in a tared vial. 2. Grind a small amount of the dry unknown component to a fine powder on a watch glass using a spatula or a flat bottomed stirring rod. Divide the solid into four nearly equal portions. Combine portions 1 and 2. Thoroughly mix portion 3 with an approximately equal amount of finely ground acetanilide, and thoroughly mix portion 4 with an approximately equal amount of finely ground phenacetin.
