Purpose: to compare the relative reactivities of different alkyl halides with two different reagents: sodium iodide in acetone and silver nitrate in ethanol. Procedure: A. Reactions in Sodium Iodide/Acetone 1. Label the reaction tubes. 2.Carry out reaction 1 using 2-bromobutane, 2-bromo-2-methylpropane, 1-bromobutane. 3. Predict reactivities of substrates in NaI/acetone. Reaction 1: 1. Obtain test tubes. 2. Measure 1 mL 15% sodium iodide in acetone 3. Add 2 drops of different alkyl halide to each 4. Stopper and shake 5. Observe and record time for precipitate to form B. Reactions in Silver Nitrate/Ethanol 1. Obtain test tubes 2. Measure 2 mL 0.1 M solution silver nitrate in ethanol into each test tube 3. Add one drop of alkyl halide to each 4. Stopper and shake 5. Observe for reaction 6. Write balanced equations for each reaction undergone by each halide, and write
