Sharecropping A. plantation owners want to have a situation that is simil- ar to slavery 1. African americans want to own their own land 2. sort of compromise. 3. production of cotton- b/c cotton is profitable B. Southerns are producing so much cotton that it be- comes not as valuable 1. this harms the freedmen a) keeps them in debt b) doesn’t allow them to have any opportunity economic- ally C. freedmen lose political control 1. cotton is weighed to see how much one freedmen made, and in order to pay african americans 2. ... BUT african americans, without education, cannot read the scale, and thus they are cheated, and taken advantage of D. sharecropping almost worse than slavery 1. they thought they were free, but it was a tease 2. plantation owners can “fire” freedmen, which makes them worse off than when working on the plantation
