MAE 415 HW# 4 Contact Stress Calculate the contact stress due to gravity loading between a: 1. 25.4 mm diameter steel ball and a glass flat 2. 25.4 mm alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) ball and a flat glass sample. Also remember that Poissons ratio involves relative deflection of a material in the directions perpendicular to the applied force. It has to be 0.5 for volume to be conserved but for most metals it is on the order of 0.3. Glasses can be different....
