Ch 6 – Prejudice: Its Causes, Effects, and Cures Rwandan Genocide April-June 1994: 300,000 Rwandans killed in 100 days Most dead = Tutsis Perpetraters = Hutus Very similar ethnic grps – same language, traditions Belgian colonists saw them as distinct o Issued ID cards to differentiate o Thought Tutsis superior to Hutus Tutsis got better education/housing for generations Resentment among Hutus (inferior) gradually built up 1959 Riots – more than 20,000 Tutsis killed Belgians granted Rwanda independence in 1962 Already introduced idea of discrimination Tutsis portrayed as scapegoats for every crisis The Holocaust Persecution of ~6 million Jews and 6 million other “undesirables” 1933: Nazi party comes to power in Germany, starts “Final Solution” to “Jewish problem” 1945: 2/3 European Jews murdered Other victims: - Roma (Gypsies) - Mental and physical disabled - 3 million Soviet prisoners of war 1

Prejudice – an attitude, usually negative, toward the members of some group, based solely on their membership in that group. (not on indiv, just the grp they’re in) Emotional component – have bad attitude towards Martians Discrimination – refers to negative actions toward the groups that are the targets of prejudice. Behavior component – don’t like Martians cuz they’re rude 2

- Attitudes a nd b eh aviors are often loosely linked - Can b e prejudiced without being discrimination Stereotyping: Beliefs about Social Groups Gender stereotypes – beliefs concerning the characteristics of men and women. Male traits Aggressive, sexually motivated, responsible, rational/unemotional, leader, mechanical, boozy Female traits Nagging, dramatic/emotional, weaker, caregiver, multitasker, relationship-focused Warmth = core female trait, women are often seen more positively than are men. Same trait = not suited for high-status positions. Stereotypes often result in Glass ceiling – barriers based on biases that prevent qualified women from advancing to top- level positions. Women can’t win by acting more like men, either.
