ANNOUNCEMENTS Don’t worry about the waitlist. I am sure everyone who wants to take the class will get in. The wait list is not an issue. Secondly, people commented that I had the wrong date in April as a due date. I will fix that. There is a lot of bureaucracy with the school, but we may not have a final exam on the final exam date. We will have a sustainability paper in place of the exam. LECTURE By way of introduction, last time I pointed out that the class has two primary goals. One is to introduce you to the science of geology without textbooks and memorization of details. Science starts with observations. When you make a number of them, you try to relate them in some way. In your case, you will look at Strawberry Creek and make observations to understand the first goal. We will have lectures to point you to where and what to look for at Strawberry Creek. One part of the assignment will be to look at the mouth of Strawberry Creek and to observe what happens to a lot of waste around campus. For extra credit, you can clean up Strawberry Creek during Cal Day, which is some time in April. The second goal of the class is to address the whole issue of sustainability. You will learn how to use resources more effectively. Sustainability is actually in practice on campus. You can look at the Clark Kerr campus an example. Part of the sustainability assignment will be to do water, food, or waste audits. More information about that will come. Basically, we are interested in saving energy, water, and waste, which can also result in saving money. Later in the semester, guest speakers will come and talk about energy uses in the future. The guy who is in charge of AC Transit will talk about bus passes, and hydrogen as a possible fuel in the future. Guest speakers will also talk about coal. It releases more carbon than other sources of fuel into the air, and gets into people’s lungs and causes disease. We will try to talk about how to get off that addiction. We will listen to a talk by the food service people. They are concerned about money but also about serving organic food. They will come and talk about their program and what they have to say will be important in your food audit if you choose to do that. Strawberry Creek Assignment:
