Evolution of Prisoner Rights 3 The evolution of prisoners rights have come a long way from when the prison system was created. In the beginning prisoners had no rights at all. The prisoners had to do what they was told and when. In addition some of the prisoners had to endure public humiliation. However, many of these problems have changed through time. Now in modern time’s prisoners have more rights than they have ever had. In some instances a prisoner even has the right to sue a guard for different types of abuse. In this essay I will describe the importance and purpose of prisoner rights, the effect of these rights on the individual inmate, the eighth amendment, the civil rights litigation of 1983, and the implementation of prisoner rights. I will start with the purpose of prisoner rights and why they are important. Prisoners have the right that every basic human would. These rights would include being protected by authorities, access to medical attention, and the rights to read, communicate, and express themselves within limits. Prisoners also have the right to express problems with the standard of living, the right to access to court of law, freedom of religion, and last but not least, food,
