Transgender Inmates The transgender population is continuing to grow throughout prisons across the United States but they are still considered a diverse group that many do not take the time to understand. Based on information found during a study research found that transgender inmates in prisons for men are treated very poorly. Many of the transgender inmates do not receive the required health care because they require physicians that understand their situation. Reports show that a high percent of the transgender inmate population have been diagnosed with HIV that they received either before or during incarceration, but they are not properly treated. Transgender inmates also are treated very poorly by the other male inmates, they are forced to play a women’s role. Many transgender inmates have claimed to be sexually assault by both inmates and guards. Also the non-sexual physical violence is five times more likely for a transgender inmate then others.
