Key Takeaways and Rationales: Naweed: As more and more thought and technology is being thrown into supply chains, the performance of supply chains is getting worse. The reason is that there are 2 types of products. These are Functional and innovative types. The supply chain for innovative products has to be different from the supply chains of the functional products. Most companies either get this wrong or are not aware of it. Some time they have the right supply chain but the nature of the product changes and there supply chain setup does not change. The supply and product strategy has to be aligned. Ludlow: The author stressed the importance of fixing a broken supply chain caused by functional or innovative products. By addressing the first concern, functional, many companies are faced with products that have a high degree of accuracy for forecasting, but have a low profit margin associated with them.
