HB 482 Advanced Hospitality Managerial Finance The broad goal of the firm (hospitality or non-hospitality) is to maximize the wealth of the firm’s shareholders . In other words, shareholders, who are the legitimate owners of a company, want management to maximize the price of the common stock. As a result, the goal of the financial manager is to make sound financing and investment decisions. Investors react to these decisions by either bidding up or bidding down the price of a firm’s stock. One might ask, given the recent stock market debacle and plummeting stock prices, are inefficient managers running companies? Not really. However, it does indicate that while sound decisions by managers’ affects the price of a firm’s stock, it is not the only factor. Fear and Greed are two very powerful sentiments, which affect stock prices. In 2002 the plummeting of stock prices was the result of fear driven by uncertainty in the aftermath of September 11, and large scale accounting scandals at few companies such as Enron, Anderson, WorldCom, Global Crossing, and Merck. This has investors wondering, can we trust the numbers? And how many more cases like this will unfold in the future? This fear fueled by daily news stories of the shenanigans of the corporate officers, have struck at the heart of investor confidence, resulting in descending stock values. s Instructor:A.J.
