Lecture Seven 9/10/10 Read pgs. 125-141. Look up 1-2 facts about Cystic Fibrosis! Nucleic Acids - polymers of nucleotides. Un-branched molecules- linear. The main structure is often referred to as the sugar-phosphate backbone. They are acids because they contain the functional group, the phosphate group. Nucleotide - 5-carbon sugar: ribose in RNA, deoxyribose in DNA. Also attached is a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base (5 types). Nitrogenous bases- Cytosine Guanine Adenine Thymine Chemical Reactions - occur anytime two or more atoms, ions or molecules collide in such a way that they produce a new substance. They must physically hit each other. If you heat it up, the reactants move faster, they hit each other more often, and are more likely to collide in the right orientation creating a certain chemical reaction. Laws of Thermodynamics - Energy can neither be created nor destroyed only converted from one form to another. (Energy is like money!)
