Unformatted text preview: Amy Callaway Professor Howells English 5730 April 23, 2010 Final Draft The speaker asks , “How do I feel about my period?”, repeating a question the audience assumes she was asked moments before. She then hesitates before answering (hypophora). Her answer is convincingly natural as her thoughts flow easily from one to the next. This beautifully demonstrated rhetorical strategy is sprezzatura, a rehearsed spontaneity when speaking. Sprezzatura supports a speakers credibility and therefore in- directly the ethos of the company she represents. The appeal to ethos is exhausted in both Kotex advertisements. Credibility is established for not only the speaker but the company she represents. The advertisement applies paralepsis, a rhetorical device where the speaker seems to pass over the point he/she is trying to make.
