Morrow 1 Todd Morrow English 101 Mr. Hohmann October 6, 2008 Hip-hop Defeats a Stereotype Hip-hop is a movement, a lifestyle, an art form. Its subjects vary from love and loss, to injustice or fairness, to figures in history and present day peoples. None of this was known to Laura Hall, until the day that she truly listened to hip-hop for the first time. Her husband has always liked hip-hop. While they were dating, he would play it while they were riding in the car. Hall disliked hip hop so much that she would give him “the silent treatment” (Hall par. 1) for listening to it. Sometime after they were married though, her views of hip-hop changed forever: I sat alone on the floor… piecing a quilt when the CD changer switched to a Mos Def album that [my husband] Adam had been listening to a few days before. What had once sounded like a muddle of words… took form and my belief in the message of hip-hop began. (par.3) Now, her love of “socially conscious MC’s” (par. 6) exceeds that of her husband’s. She uses hip-hop as a tool to further her own education about African-American history, and a motivator to help her work more efficiently. Hall also uses hip hop as motivation to help her raise awareness about her husband’s mental illnesses so that she may better not only their lives, but
