Ch 4 Cell Membrane How is the structure of a membrane related to its function? Membrane Function Selectively isolates inside of the cell from the outside Regulates exchange of substances in and out of cell Facilitates communication with other cells Phospholipid review- membrane made of these Membrane proteins Transport proteins: regulate movement through membrane o Channel proteins o Carrier proteins Receptor proteins: trigger cellular response when specific molecules attach Recognition proteins: ID tags and attachment sites o Glycoproteins Transport processes Passive transport: movement down conc gradient; no E required o Simple diffusion: goes across membrane without help o Facilitated diffusion: goes across membrane with help from proteins o Osmosis: water moves through differentially permeable membrane Diffusion o All molecules constantly vibrating o Those in gas and liquid move randomly o Mixtures tend to become uniform Molecules move from area of high conc to area of low conc; down concentration gradient After time concentrations become equal
