Unformatted text preview: MEMORANDUM To: Ms. Dorothy Quinn Green Chemical Initiatives LLC Research Spet Date: April 8, 2009 Greetings, The desired reaction was performed using three separate reagents: 4-iodophenol, 4-bromophenol, and 4-chlorophenol was done on two separate occasions. The reaction was initiated by adding potassium carbonate (0.60mmol, 0.0829g), phenyl boronic acid (0.20mmol, 0.0244g), palladium in minimal catalytic amount, and the respective halophenol. Aqueous hydrogen chloride was added in relative amount to make the solution acidic. The mixture was then vacuum filtrated, leaving a solid that was dissolved in methanol and then vacuum filtrated again. The remaining filtrate was recrystalized with a 1:1 methanol:water mixture. Each individual halophenol provided 4-phenylphenol (m.p. 164-168C) as a reaction product, followed by determination of each products melting point.
